The sunwatcher at the Hopi village of Walpi helped set the start of the winter solstice Soyal festival by observing when the sun set in a horizon notch known as Luhavwu Chochomo. The next morning, those responsible for organizing the ceremony declare the Soyal season will begin in four days. The main dance usually occurs on the winter solstice, about 11-1/2 days after the Luhavwu Chochomo alignment. (Griffith Observatory, after Alexander M.
